How can we bridge nature’s design with human technologies to sustainably store data in living systems like kelp?

CODING PLANTS, Terreform ONE’s contribution to the 2025 Venice Architectural Biennale: Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective., bioengineers human knowledge into kelp DNA, kelp into a regenerative archive. By translating architectural ideas into sequences of amino acids and DNA, the project embeds information directly into living kelp, where it can be stored, replicated, and preserved through natural growth rather than energy-intensive digital infrastructure. The work proposes a future in which data storage is biological, durable, and symbiotic with the ecosystems that carry it.
